Overview and Compliance Stance Short-term rentals are allowed in Crandon and Forest County. Wisconsin Statutes define a short-term rental (STR) as a residential dwelling rented for fewer than 29 consecutive days (Wis. Act 59, 2017). Crandon has not enacted city-specific short-term rental ordinances; hosts operate under state-level requirements and Forest County’s land use/zoning program for rental dwellings. As a result, investors must satisfy state licensing, health/safety, and tax obligations, plus county zoning compliance, including septic capacity constraints. Forest County regulates STRs at the county level and issues a unified land use permit after state review.

Crandon is a small city in Forest County, in the heart of northern Wisconsin's Northwoods region. With a population of roughly 1,900 residents, it serves as the county seat and functions primarily as a four-season recreation hub surrounded by forest, lakes, and an extensive trail network. The community is best known for hosting one of the most storied snowmobile races in the country and as a gateway to the Chequamegon–Nicolet National Forest. It lies approximately 100 miles due north of Green Bay, the nearest major city, a drive of about two hours on US Highway 8 and US Highway 141.
Each January and February, Crandon draws thousands of visitors for the World Championship Snowmobile Derby, held at the Crandon International Raceway just outside town. Founded in the 1960s, the event is one of the oldest and most prestigious stops on the professional snocross circuit, and the surrounding campground fills with race teams and fans for nearly a month of qualifying rounds and finals. Beyond race week, the facility operates as a multi-use motorsports park hosting off-road truck races, short-course events, and amateur races through the warmer months.
The Chequamegon–Nicolet National Forest wraps around Crandon and stretches across more than a million acres of northern Wisconsin. It offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, and, in winter, hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile and cross-country ski trails. Several developed campgrounds, swimming beaches, and picnic areas sit within an easy half-hour drive, and the forest is also laced with designated ATV and UTV routes that are a major draw in summer and fall.
Lake Metonga lies within Crandon's city limits and anchors much of the local summer scene. The roughly 2,000-acre lake is a longtime favorite for walleye, musky, and panfish anglers, and its shorelines are dotted with public access points, resorts, and vacation cabins. Boating, swimming, and paddling draw families throughout the warmer months, while the frozen surface becomes part of the regional snowmobile trail system once winter sets in.
Crandon's mix of marquee events, deep forest, and lake-based recreation makes it a natural base for a short-term rental. Visitors are drawn by a defined peak season of snowmobiling and derby week in winter, followed by a longer stretch of fishing, ATV riding, and lake vacations from late spring through early fall, giving the area unusually balanced year-round demand for cabin-style and family-friendly lodging.
