STR Regulations for Yauco, Puerto Rico

Executive overview: short‑term rentals (STRs) are permitted in Yauco, PR; however, hosts must satisfy Puerto Rico–wide requirements (e.g., PR Tourism Company registration, municipal room tax participation, and an annual bond) and may also be required to meet municipal business and inspection requirements. The available sources do not provide a dedicated Yauco STR ordinance, so compliance rests on PR‑level rules and local municipal processes; plan to engage Yauco’s municipal government to confirm any city‑specific steps before opening.

1) Allowed and how to start an STR business in Yauco

  • STRs are allowed in Yauco (as evidenced by active listings on Airbnb and forum reports from PR hosts), but you must comply with PR registration, tax, and municipal rules.
  • Start sequence, based on available sources:
    1. Register as a new hotelier with the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC). This registration allows platforms (e.g., Airbnb) to collect and remit local tourism/room taxes on your behalf without you filing them separately.
    2. Obtain the required PRTC bond through a local insurer. Hosts report this is inexpensive (about $100/year) and renews annually.
    3. If you receive notice that municipal room tax registration requires it, obtain a Merchant’s Registration Certificate (CR) from Hacienda (Puerto Rico Treasury).
    4. Confirm municipal compliance requirements (business license, ARPE permit, and inspections such as fire/sanitation), as recent forum posts indicate towns are enforcing them for STRs.
    5. Add your PR hotelier identifier (not SSN/EIN) in the Airbnb host tax settings so platforms can remit room taxes correctly.
    6. Once PRTC registration is active, ensure your listing reflects your hotelier number so tax collection/remittance is handled by the platform.

Overview of Yauco

Yauco (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈʝawko]) is a town and municipality in southern Puerto Rico. Although the downtown is inland, the municipality stretches to a southern coast facing the Caribbean Sea. Yauco is located south of Maricao, Lares and Adjuntas; east of Sabana Grande and Guánica; and west of Guayanilla. The municipality consists of 20 barrios and Yauco Pueblo (the downtown and administrative center of the municipality). It is both a principal town of the Yauco Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Ponce-Yauco-Coamo Combined Statistical Area. It was founded by Fernando Pacheco on February 29, 1756, and developed for commodity crops of tobacco, sugar cane, and coffee. Yauco became a center for Corsican immigration to Puerto Rico in the 19th century due to its geographical similarity to their homeland. Corsicans have contributed to many areas of life in Yauco, particularly to its coffee industry. This has played a role in the town's nicknames of El Pueblo del Café (Town of Coffee), and residents of the municipality are often referred to as Los Corsos (The Corsicans).
