Brewster is a small seaside town in Barnstable County, Massachusetts, set on the northern edge of Cape Cod along Cape Cod Bay. With a year-round population of roughly 10,000, it carries the quiet, historic character typical of the Lower Cape, and is best known for its preserved sea captains' homes, its wide tidal flats, and its easy access to the natural attractions of outer Cape Cod. The town sits about 85 miles southeast of Boston, and the drive can easily stretch past two hours on summer weekends as traffic funnels toward the bridges.
One of the town's marquee draws is Nickerson State Park, which covers more than 1,900 acres of pine forest and freshwater ponds just south of the village center. The park offers hiking and biking trails, swimming in its kettle ponds, and a popular campground, and it lies only a few minutes from most of Brewster's inns and rental homes. It also ties directly into the town's bike network.
That network centers on the Cape Cod Rail Trail, a paved bicycle path that runs from Dennis through Brewster and on to Wellfleet and Eastham. Guests can pedal from a rental directly onto the trail, reaching ponds, cranberry bogs, and ice cream stands without ever sharing a road with cars. The Brewster section of the trail passes through Nickerson and is one of the most scenic stretches on the Cape.
Running through the heart of Brewster is Route 6A, the Old King's Highway, one of the longest historic districts in the country. The Brewster stretch is lined with 18th- and 19th-century sea captains' houses, antique shops, small inns, and casual restaurants, offering a slower, more architectural alternative to the busier commercial corridors elsewhere on the Cape. Walking the byway is itself a low-key attraction for visitors.
To the north, the town's bay beaches include Breakwater Beach and Crosby Landing, where the famous Brewster Flats extend out into Cape Cod Bay at low tide. Families come to walk the flats, search for shells, and watch the sun set over the water.
Brewster works well as a short-term-rental base because it offers the visual appeal and amenities of the Cape without the density of Chatham or Provincetown. Guests can walk or bike to beaches and ponds, dine along Route 6A, and still be within an easy drive of the Cape Cod National Seashore, Wellfleet's harbor, and the ferries to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket from Hyannis.
