Trempealeau, WI

Trempealeau is a small village in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, perched on the east bank of the Mississippi River in the heart of the Driftless Area, a region of the Upper Midwest that escaped the flattening effects of the last glaciation and is known for its dramatic bluffs, coulees, and river valleys. With a population of roughly 1,600 residents, the village has a quiet, historic character, its tidy streets and 19th-century buildings reflecting its origins as a steamboat stop and logging town. Today it is best known as a gateway to outdoor recreation on the river and in the surrounding bluffs, and as a stop for cyclists traveling the Great River State Trail. Just north of the village, Perrot State Park is the headline attraction of the area. Wrapping around the confluence of the Trempealeau River with the Mississippi, the park encompasses more than 2,700 acres of woodlands, wetlands, and steep bluffs, including the iconic 425-foot Trempealeau Mountain, which can be reached by a roughly 1.5-mile climb to a scenic overlook. Visitors come for hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, and the views across the river into Minnesota. It is a particularly strong draw in fall, when the hardwood hillsides turn color.

A short walk or bike ride from the village leads to the Great River State Trail, a converted rail-trail that follows the Mississippi for about 24 miles between Onalaska and Marshland, passing right through Trempealeau. The flat, crushed-limestone surface makes it a favorite for cyclists, joggers, and winter fat-tire riders, and it connects travelers to the larger state trail network that extends north toward Eau Claire.

Just across the river in Minnesota lies Winona, a small college town of about 27,000 set beneath bluffs that mirror the ones on the Wisconsin side. About a 25-minute drive from Trempealeau via the interstate bridge, Winona offers museums, historic architecture, a riverside park system, and a lively Main Street that gives visitors an easy day-trip option. To the south, the larger city of La Crosse, roughly a half-hour drive away, anchors the region with a historic downtown, the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse campus, and a string of riverfront parks and bluffs popular for hiking and sunset watching.

For owners of short-term rentals, Trempealeau is a compelling base precisely because of its smallness. The village itself offers a relaxed, walkable setting with a handful of restaurants, taverns, and riverfront access, while Perrot State Park, the Great River State Trail, and the broader Driftless landscape deliver the kind of natural amenities that drive year-round bookings. Its position between La Crosse and the Minnesota border also makes it a convenient overnight stop for road trippers, cyclists, and leaf-peepers exploring the Upper Mississippi valley.
