Pipestem is a small unincorporated community in Summers County, West Virginia, with only a few hundred year-round residents. Tucked into the Appalachian foothills where the Bluestone River cuts through a long gorge, the area is best known as the home of Pipestem Resort State Park, one of West Virginia's flagship outdoor destinations, and serves as a quiet gateway to the broader New River region. It lies roughly 20 miles south of Beckley, the nearest city of real size, and about 75 miles south of Charleston, the state capital.

The centerpiece of the community is Pipestem Resort State Park itself, which sprawls across the rim and floor of the Bluestone River gorge. The park offers a full-service mountain lodge, cabins, two championship golf courses, horseback riding, and a distinctive aerial tramway that carries visitors down into the canyon. Because the park's main overlooks and lodge are essentially adjacent to the community, Pipestem lodging is within minutes of the trails, pool, and the river's fishing holes.

Just a few miles to the west sits Bluestone State Park and the 2,000-plus-acre Bluestone Lake, a wide, calm reservoir formed by Bluestone Dam on the New River. About 20 minutes north, the town of Hinton sits at the confluence of the Greenbrier and New rivers and serves as the seat of Summers County. Its compact historic downtown, the local Railroad Museum, and the dramatic Sandstone Falls on the New River make it a worthwhile day trip, and it remains a small-town cultural anchor for the surrounding hollows.

A bit farther afield, the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, roughly 90 minutes to the north, has become one of the most-visited outdoor destinations in the eastern United States. Whitewater rafting, rock climbing, the New River Gorge Bridge, and the small historic towns of Fayette County draw a steady stream of adventurers, and many of them stage their trips from the calmer, more affordable base at Pipestem.

For short-term rental owners, Pipestem's appeal lies in its year-round, four-season draw. The flagship state park next door, the nearby lake, historic Hinton, and the wider New River Gorge region all combine to make the community a natural base for travelers who want seclusion, scenery, and access to some of southern West Virginia's most popular attractions. Demand typically peaks in summer and during the fall foliage season, but the resort's amenities and the surrounding outdoor recreation help support winter and shoulder-season stays as well.
