Verona Regulations

Verona allows STRs but only as a primary‑residence use, with a minimum 7‑day stay and a 180‑day annual cap, and requires a county/state tourist rooming house license plus health inspections; moderate licensing fees and the city’s ongoing push for higher local fees and stricter enforcement create a significant compliance burden that limits pure investment opportunities.

About Verona

Verona is a growing suburban city in Dane County, Wisconsin, situated on the southwestern edge of the Madison metropolitan area. With a population of roughly 13,000 to 14,000 residents, it has the feel of a small but expanding community that nonetheless sits within easy reach of a major state capital. The city is widely known as the home of Epic Systems, the large health-care software company whose sprawling campus anchors the local economy, and it serves as a natural gateway to the rolling hills, small towns, and outdoor attractions of southwestern Wisconsin's Driftless region. Verona lies approximately ten miles southwest of downtown Madison, typically a fifteen- to twenty-minute drive depending on traffic and route.

Just to the northeast, Madison offers a full slate of urban attractions within a short drive, including the Wisconsin State Capitol, the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus, and the lakeside green spaces along Lake Mendota. The capital's farmers' market around the Capitol Square and the museums of the university campus draw visitors year-round, giving short-term rental guests an easy urban excursion from a quieter suburban base.

A little farther afield, the city of New Glarus, often marketed as "Little Switzerland," sits roughly twenty-five miles to the southwest and is known for its Swiss-heritage architecture, the Swiss Center of North America, and the New Glarus Brewing Company. The drive typically takes about thirty minutes via Highway 69, making it a popular day trip for visitors looking for a taste of European charm in the upper Midwest.

Outdoor recreation options are abundant nearby. Governor Dodge State Park, located about forty-five miles to the southwest near Dodgeville, features nearly five thousand acres of wooded hills, two lakes, horseback trails, and waterfalls within the Driftless Area's distinctive terrain. Closer to home, Cave of the Mounds in Blue Mounds is a National Natural Landmark roughly thirty miles west of Verona, with guided tours through limestone caverns and walking trails along the surface prairie and oak savanna.

To the northwest, Devil's Lake State Park is one of Wisconsin's most popular outdoor destinations, about fifty miles from Verona and roughly an hour's drive. Its quartzite bluffs rise several hundred feet above a 360-acre lake, offering hiking, climbing, swimming, and paddling in the heart of the Baraboo Hills.

Verona makes a compelling base for short-term rental operators because of its strategic position. Visitors who stay here can enjoy a quieter, residential Wisconsin experience with quick access to Madison's cultural and culinary scene, the breweries and small towns of the Driftless region, and some of the state's most beloved state parks. The combination of a stable suburban setting, a steady flow of Epic Systems-related business travel, and proximity to both urban and outdoor destinations gives the area a year-round draw that supports a diverse guest mix.
