About Sparta

Sparta is a small city of roughly 9,500 residents in Monroe County, in the rolling hills of western Wisconsin. Tucked into the Driftless region, a part of the Upper Midwest that escaped the flattening effects of the last glaciation, the town carries the unofficial title "Bicycling Capital of America," a nickname built on its long-standing role as the eastern trailhead of one of the country's most famous rail-trails. Sparta has a quiet, outdoorsy character, with a compact downtown ringed by farmland, bluffs, and a growing network of purpose-built bike paths. It sits about 30 miles southeast of La Crosse, the nearest city of any real size, and roughly 100 miles west of Madison.

The marquee draw is the Elroy-Sparta State Trail, a 32-mile crushed-limestone rail-trail that begins right in Sparta and runs westward through three hand-cut limestone tunnels and across several tall trestles before ending in Elroy. Opened in 1967, it is widely cited as the first state-operated rail-trail in the United States, and it still draws cyclists from across the Midwest each summer. Riders can also connect from the Elroy-Sparta onto the neighboring 400 State Trail and La Crosse River State Trail, forming a multi-day loop that makes Sparta a natural base for trail tourists.

Downtown, the Deke Slayton Memorial Space and Bicycle Museum honors one of Sparta's most famous sons, Mercury astronaut Deke Slayton, while also telling the story of how the town became a cycling destination. The museum sits within walking distance of the local trailheads and gives visitors a reason to linger in the historic main-street area even on a rainy day. A few blocks away, the Sparta Area Trail Network offers more than 30 miles of dedicated mountain-bike singletrack in the surrounding ridges, ranging from gentle beginner loops to technical descents that have helped put the town on the regional riding map.

Just outside town, Fort McCoy occupies a large swath of Monroe County and contributes a steady flow of visitors, family members, and trainees to the area throughout the year. To the northwest, the Mississippi River town of La Crosse adds riverfront dining, the Grandad Bluff overlook, and a regional airport roughly half an hour away, giving Sparta visitors a full day-trip option without much driving.

Sparta's appeal as a short-term-rental base comes from this unusual combination: a small-town setting with a genuine national reputation among cyclists, the Elroy-Sparta Trail at its doorstep, supporting attractions like the Slayton Museum and the local mountain-bike network, and easy access to the larger amenities of the La Crosse river valley. For travelers who like active, outdoorsy getaways off the main tourist track, it offers a distinctive niche that is hard to replicate elsewhere in the Midwest.
