Oshkosh Regulations

STRs are explicitly permitted citywide but require multi‑layer licensing (state TRH/hotel, county health, city room tax and STR license), pre‑ and health inspections, monthly tax reporting, and strict operational limits. The 180‑day cap and additional compliance steps (insurance, signage/noise/parking standards) increase costs and process burden for investors.

About Oshkosh

Oshkosh is a mid-sized city in eastern Wisconsin, serving as the county seat of Winnebago County. With a population of roughly 66,000 to 70,000, it sits at the point where the Fox River widens into Lake Winnebago, and it carries the easygoing character of a Great Lakes town that mixes industrial heritage with lakefront leisure. Oshkosh is internationally known as the home of EAA AirVenture, the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual fly-in convention that draws hundreds of thousands of aviation enthusiasts every summer, and it is also recognized as the headquarters of the Oshkosh Corporation, the specialty vehicle manufacturer. The city lies about 90 miles northwest of Milwaukee and roughly 200 miles north of Chicago, making it a convenient stopover or base for travelers exploring the broader Fox River Valley and the lake country of east-central Wisconsin.

The EAA Aviation Museum is one of the city's marquee year-round attractions, showcasing more than 200 historic aircraft, exhibits on the history of flight, and a hands-on discovery area for younger visitors. Located right at Wittman Regional Airport on the south side of the city, it is just a few minutes' drive from downtown Oshkosh and operates as the permanent companion to the famous summer fly-in.

Just to the west and north of the city stretches Lake Winnebago, the largest lake entirely within Wisconsin, covering roughly 137,000 acres. The shoreline offers public launches, small sandy beaches, walleye and sturgeon fishing, and miles of boating routes, and the ice-fishing shanties that appear each winter have become a regional tradition in their own right.

Within the city itself, the Paine Art Center and Gardens occupies a Tudor-style mansion and surrounding botanical gardens in a residential neighborhood just a short drive west of downtown. The property hosts rotating art exhibitions, decorative arts displays, and seasonal garden walks that draw both local residents and visitors passing through the Fox Valley.

A short drive north of Oshkosh, the Fox River continues toward the city of Green Bay and the broader Door County peninsula, while heading south along the lake leads to the smaller communities of Fond du Lac and, beyond them, Milwaukee's lakefront attractions.

Oshkosh makes a compelling base for short-term rentals because it offers something for nearly every season: the once-a-year spectacle of EAA AirVenture, year-round aviation and art museums, the open water and ice of Lake Winnebago, and easy road access to both the Green Bay area and the Milwaukee–Chicago corridor, all wrapped in a walkable, mid-sized Midwestern city with a steady rhythm of regional visitors.
