Quilcene, WA

Quilcene is a small unincorporated community in Jefferson County on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, home to a few hundred residents spread across the surrounding valley. Tucked along the western shore of Hood Canal at the foot of the Olympic Mountains, it has the unhurried feel of a rural Pacific Northwest town surrounded by working farms, shellfish operations, and forested ridges. Just south of town, Mount Walker rises as one of the few peaks in the Olympic foothills accessible by a short trail. The roughly three-mile one-way climb gains about 2,000 feet and rewards hikers with sweeping views of the Olympic range, Hood Canal, and on clear days, the distant cone of Mount Rainier. It is a favorite half-day outing for both visitors and locals wanting a quick immersion into the surrounding landscape.

About 25 miles east across the head of Hood Canal lies Port Townsend, a Victorian seaport town roughly 45 minutes from Quilcene by car. The town is known for its preserved 19th-century architecture, art galleries, and a bustling waterfront. At the tip of the peninsula, Fort Worden State Park preserves a former military installation turned public park and conference center, recognized widely as a filming location for the movie "An Officer and a Gentleman."

Quilcene makes a compelling base for short-term rentals because it offers an authentic slice of the Olympic Peninsula without the crowds of the better-known gateway towns. Visitors get a quiet, agricultural community with quick access to world-class wilderness, the seafood-rich waters of Hood Canal, and the cultural offerings of Port Townsend.
