About Glenwood

Glenwood is a tiny unincorporated community in Klickitat County, in the south-central part of Washington State, nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Range near the southeastern flank of Mount Adams. With only a few hundred residents, Glenwood has the feel of a quiet rural crossroads rather than a town, surrounded by ranchland, forest, and the rolling terrain that lies between the Columbia River Gorge and the high Cascades. It serves primarily as a gateway community for visitors heading into the Mount Adams backcountry and the surrounding national forest lands, and its character is shaped by the timber, ranching, and outdoor recreation that dominate this part of the state. The nearest major city is Portland, Oregon, which sits roughly 90 miles to the southwest, with the smaller community of White Salmon and the larger city of Hood River, Oregon, both about 35 to 40 miles to the south across the Columbia River.

Just north of Glenwood rises Mount Adams, a 12,281-foot stratovolcano and one of the largest peaks in the Cascades. The mountain offers hiking, climbing, and backcountry camping throughout the warmer months and is surrounded by the Mount Adams Wilderness, where trails wind through subalpine meadows and old-growth forest. Drive time from Glenwood to the main trailheads on the mountain's southern and eastern sides is generally under an hour, making the community a convenient base for climbers and day hikers.

A short drive from Glenwood lies the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, a vast expanse of more than 1.3 million acres stretching across the southern Washington Cascades. The forest includes everything from the Trout Lake valley and the Lewis River corridor to the high country around Mount St. Helens, offering fishing, rafting, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing. Many of the closest forest access points are within a 30- to 45-minute drive of Glenwood, and the area sees significant seasonal traffic from visitors heading to climbing routes, hot springs, and remote trailheads.

To the south, the Columbia River Gorge provides one of the region's marquee scenic drives and outdoor playgrounds, with waterfalls, windsurfing, and wineries on both the Washington and Oregon sides. Towns like White Salmon and Hood River, about 40 minutes south, give Glenwood-area visitors easy access to restaurants, breweries, and river-based recreation while still feeling a world away from urban life.

Glenwood is a compelling base for short-term rentals precisely because of its position at the intersection of two major draws: the wild, less-crowded Mount Adams country to the north and the well-traveled Columbia River Gorge to the south. Travelers who book a stay here get the quiet, dark-sky character of a small rural community, with year-round outdoor adventure and a surprising variety of restaurants and amenities within a short drive.
