Kanab, UT

Kanab is a small town in Kane County in southern Utah, with a population of roughly 4,000 to 5,000 residents. Tucked against the Vermilion Cliffs and surrounded by red-rock country, it carries a relaxed, cinematic feel that longtime residents and visitors have long nicknamed "Little Hollywood," a nod to the many Western films and television shows that have been shot on the dramatic landscapes around it. Just south of Kanab, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is reached by about an 80-mile drive, often close to two hours, depending on conditions at Jacob Lake. The North Rim is markedly less crowded than the South Rim and is open seasonally, typically from mid-May to mid-October, which makes it a strong secondary draw for travelers who have already seen the more visited side of the canyon.

Closer to town, Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park sits about 20 miles west of Kanab and offers shifting coral-colored sands popular for off-highway vehicle riding, sandboarding, and casual family time. The park is one of the easiest day trips from Kanab and is especially attractive for visitors who want a low-effort outdoor experience without the longer drives required for the major national parks.

Within Kanab itself, the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is a unique local landmark and the largest no-kill sanctuary of its kind in the United States, home to dogs, cats, horses, birds, and other rescued animals. Tours and volunteer opportunities draw animal lovers from across the country, adding a softer counterpoint to the rugged outdoor recreation that defines the rest of the region.

Taken together, Kanab's blend of small-town character, cinematic history, and proximity to Zion, Bryce Canyon, the Grand Canyon, and Lake Powell makes it a natural hub for travelers who prefer a quieter base than the gateway towns inside the most popular parks. That mix of wide-open scenery, year-round appeal, and a steady flow of outdoor-focused visitors is exactly what tends to support a healthy short-term rental market.
