Round Rock Regulations

STRs are explicitly allowed citywide with no meaningful caps and a low $50 application fee, plus the city takes a business-friendly, education-focused enforcement approach. However, operators must navigate multiple permits (TUP, annual license), provide detailed documentation (site/floor plans, insurance), complete state/local tax registrations, and file monthly tax reports - manageable but moderately burdensome compliance requirements.

About Round Rock

Round Rock sits in central Texas, primarily in Williamson County with a small portion reaching into Travis County, and is one of the larger suburbs in the Greater Austin metropolitan area. With a population of roughly 130,000 residents, it has grown from a small railroad and milling town into a thriving, family-oriented city that still retains a recognizable small-town core. The city is well known as the longtime headquarters of Dell Technologies, as the home of the Round Rock Express minor-league baseball team, and as a convenient northern gateway to the Texas Hill Country. It lies approximately 20 miles north of downtown Austin along the I-35 corridor, making it a practical base for visitors who want Hill Country scenery and Austin amenities without staying in the state capital itself. Visitors are also drawn by the unusual geographic landmark that gave the city its name, a large round rock in the bed of Brushy Creek that once marked a low-water crossing for cattle drives along the Chisholm Trail.

One of the most distinctive natural attractions in the area is Inner Space Cavern, a limestone cave system discovered in 1963 during highway construction. Guided tours lead visitors through well-lit passages filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and fossil-bearing sediment, and the site sits only a short drive west of the city center.

Outdoor recreation is well represented at Old Settlers Park, a sprawling multi-use complex that anchors much of the city's active lifestyle. The park spreads across several hundred acres and includes sports fields, disc golf, splash pads, playgrounds, and a fishing lake, drawing families and tournament visitors throughout the year. Just to the northwest, Lake Georgetown offers a quieter Hill Country escape roughly a thirty-minute drive from Round Rock, with boating, fishing, and shoreline hiking along the San Gabriel River arm of the reservoir.

Downtown Round Rock serves as the city's social and dining hub, where Main Street is lined with locally owned restaurants, breweries, and the small plaza that marks the historic round rock itself. The walkable district hosts seasonal events and is a popular evening gathering place, giving the city a sense of place that contrasts with the big-box retail corridors along I-35. The nearby Dell Diamond stadium, home to the Round Rock Express, anchors another cluster of entertainment options for sports travelers.

Round Rock appeals to short-term rental owners and guests because it pairs a safe, polished suburban setting with genuine regional character. Visitors can spend mornings hiking Hill Country trails, afternoons exploring downtown or catching a ballgame, and evenings sampling the food and drink scene that spills over from nearby Austin, all from a single convenient home base.
