About Lake Conroe

Conroe sits in Montgomery County in Southeast Texas, serving as the county seat and home to a population of roughly 90,000 residents. The city has grown rapidly as a Houston-area suburb, located about 40 miles north of downtown Houston along Interstate 45. Its character blends small-town Texas heritage with the amenities of a fast-growing suburban community, and it has become well known as a launching point for lake recreation, outdoor adventure, and weekend escapes from the Houston metro area.

Lake Conroe is the marquee attraction in the area, a 21,000-acre reservoir created in the early 1970s on the West Fork of the San Jacinto River. It offers boating, fishing, swimming, and waterfront dining, and it sits just a few minutes west of downtown Conroe. Visitors come year-round for crappie, catfish, and bass fishing, and the lake hosts several annual fishing tournaments. It is also a popular spot for houseboating and lakeside stays, with multiple public access points and marinas along more than 200 miles of shoreline.

Just north of the city, the Sam Houston National Forest spans more than 163,000 acres across three Texas counties and provides extensive opportunities for hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing. The forest sits in the larger Pineywoods ecoregion and is home to long stretches of the Lone Star Hiking Trail, a nearly 100-mile backpacking route. From Conroe, the forest's southern reaches can be reached in roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car, making it a convenient day trip for nature lovers.

Closer in, W. Goodrich Jones State Forest offers a more compact outdoor experience on about 1,700 acres just a short drive from the city. Managed in part by the Texas A&M Forest Service, the property includes hiking and biking trails winding through native pine and hardwood habitat. It is a popular destination for birdwatching, picnicking, and family-friendly day hikes that showcase the East Texas woods.

Downtown Conroe has experienced a revival in recent years, with a walkable historic square featuring local restaurants, shops, breweries, and the historic Crighton Theatre, which stages community theater productions. The area hosts regular events and markets, giving the city center a lively feel that contrasts with the suburban developments and lakefront properties elsewhere in town.

Conroe is a compelling base for short-term rentals because it offers the rare combination of a genuine waterfront recreation destination, access to a large national forest, and proximity to one of the largest metro areas in the country. Guests can spend mornings on Lake Conroe, afternoons hiking in the Piney Woods, and evenings in a revitalized downtown, all within an easy drive of Houston. The mix of small-town atmosphere, outdoor appeal, and accessibility from a major metropolitan airport gives the area year-round appeal for travelers seeking a Texas getaway.
