About Harker Heights

Harker Heights is a suburban city in Bell County, Texas, home to approximately 32,000 residents. It has a family-oriented, commuter-friendly character shaped largely by its proximity to Fort Cavazos, one of the largest active-duty U.S. Army installations in the country. The city sits in Central Texas just east of Killeen and forms part of the broader Killeen–Temple–Fort Cavazos metropolitan area, roughly 70 miles north of Austin and about 150 miles south of Dallas. Its economy, dining scene, and housing stock are closely tied to military families, retirees, and defense contractors, while its location along Interstate 14 makes it a convenient base for exploring the Hill Country and the lakes of the Brazos River basin.

Just a short drive west of Harker Heights, Stillhouse Hollow Lake offers more than 6,000 acres of water and over 30 miles of shoreline managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. About a 15-minute drive from downtown Harker Heights, the lake is popular for boating, kayaking, swimming, and fishing, with several public parks and marinas ringing its edges. It is a popular escape during the hot Texas summers and a quieter alternative to the busier lakes farther west.

About 20 minutes northeast of the city, Lake Belton provides another major outdoor recreation option, with nearly 20,000 acres of impounded water along the Leon River. The lake is surrounded by several parks and is well known for sailing regattas, striped bass fishing, and lakeside camping. Together with Stillhouse Hollow, it gives visitors a two-lake playground within easy reach of town.

To the east, the small village of Salado is roughly a 25-minute drive and offers a charming change of pace with its historic Main Street, art galleries, antique shops, and the storied Stagecoach Inn. Meanwhile, downtown Killeen, immediately adjacent to Harker Heights, provides the everyday conveniences, restaurants, and shopping that the smaller city itself lacks. For day-trippers, Waco sits about an hour and a half to the northeast, and the wineries and limestone landscapes of the Texas Hill Country begin within an hour's drive to the west.

For short-term rental investors and operators, Harker Heights offers a compelling mix of steady baseline demand from military visitors, families in transition, and business travelers, layered with tourism appeal from the nearby lakes, the historic village of Salado, and easy road access to Austin, Waco, and the Hill Country. Its affordability compared to larger Texas metros, paired with year-round visitor flows tied to Fort Cavazos, makes it a practical and resilient market for vacation rental investment.
