About Crossville

Crossville is a small city of roughly 12,000 residents in Cumberland County, Tennessee, situated on the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau. The town has long marketed itself as the "Golf Capital of Tennessee" because of the unusually high concentration of golf courses in the surrounding area, and it serves as a regional hub for travelers exploring the plateau's forests, gorges, and outdoor recreation. Its general character is that of a relaxed rural community with a modest downtown and easy access to nature. Crossville lies approximately 65 miles west of Knoxville and roughly 100 miles east of Nashville, placing it within about an hour's drive of the nearest major metropolitan area and roughly two hours from either larger city.

Just a few miles west of town, Cumberland Mountain State Park wraps a Civilian Conservation Corps–built stone dam around Byrd Lake and offers roughly 1,720 acres of hardwood forest, fishing, swimming, and miles of hiking and biking trails. The park's rustic stone bridges, cabins, and lodge reflect its 1930s construction and make it one of the most visited state parks in the region, with a drive of only about 10 to 15 minutes from central Crossville.

A short drive north of the city, the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area preserves a striking landscape of sandstone cliffs, deep gorges, and the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River. About an hour and a half from Crossville by car, the park draws visitors for whitewater rafting, horseback riding, and hiking the Charit Creek and Twin Arches trails, and it provides a major natural draw for travelers staying in the area.

To the northeast, Frozen Head State Park sits within the greater Cumberland Mountains and is known for its rugged backcountry, waterfalls such as Debord Falls, and extensive trail network that includes a section of the Cumberland Trail. The park is roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Crossville and offers a quieter, more strenuous alternative to the better-known Big South Fork.

Downtown Crossville itself is anchored by the restored Palace Theatre, a historic movie and live-performance venue that has served as a community gathering place for decades. Nearby, the Cumberland Homesteads site commemorates a New Deal-era planned community established in the 1930s, and the Crossville Museum of Aviation celebrates the city's role in World War II pilot training at the former Cumberland Airport. Together, these small institutions give the town a stronger cultural footprint than its size would suggest.

For short-term rental owners, Crossville offers an appealing combination of accessibility and natural setting. It is close enough to Knoxville and Nashville to capture weekend and holiday travelers, yet far enough from either city to feel like a genuine getaway. With state parks, a national recreation area, multiple golf courses, and a recognizable small-town identity, the market supports a steady mix of outdoor enthusiasts, retirees, and families looking for a quieter base on the Cumberland Plateau.
