About Counce

Counce is a small unincorporated community in Hardin County, in the southwestern corner of Tennessee, with a population of just a few hundred residents. It sits along the Tennessee River where the waterway widens into Pickwick Lake, and its character is defined by the water and the surrounding woodlands. The community has long functioned as a gateway to one of the region's most popular outdoor destinations, drawing visitors who come for boating, fishing, and quiet time on the lakeshore rather than urban amenities. Counce is located roughly 110 miles east of Memphis and about 150 miles southwest of Nashville, making it a convenient escape for weekend travelers from either metro area looking for a slower pace on the water.

The centerpiece of the area is Pickwick Landing State Park, which occupies more than 1,400 acres on the southern edge of the community along the Tennessee River. The park features a full-service marina, a public swimming pool, cabins, a campground, and an inn, and it is widely regarded as one of the premier smallmouth bass fishing destinations in the Southeast. Because the park is essentially adjacent to Counce, guests staying in the area can reach the boat ramps, trails, and picnic areas within just a few minutes' drive.

Just to the north of Counce lies Shiloh National Military Park, the site of one of the Civil War's bloodiest engagements in April 1862. The park preserves the battlefield, the National Cemetery, and a well-regarded visitor center that interprets the two-day battle and its aftermath. It is approximately 20 miles from Counce, generally a 30-minute drive, and pairs naturally with a lake vacation since many visitors combine fishing and water recreation with a half-day exploring the historic grounds.

A short drive to the south, across the state line into Alabama, the Muscle Shoals area offers an additional draw for travelers interested in music history, with recording studios and the Tennessee Valley region known for its role in shaping American popular music. Within Hardin County itself, the county seat of Savannah sits along the Tennessee River a few miles north of Counce and provides basic services, restaurants, and a glimpse of small-town Tennessee life along the river.

Counce makes a compelling base for short-term rentals because it offers something increasingly rare: a true lakeside retreat with easy access to a major state park, a nationally significant historic site, and a stretch of the Tennessee River known for excellent fishing. The combination of outdoor recreation, Civil War heritage, and a quiet, scenic setting draws a steady mix of families, anglers, boaters, and history-minded travelers, supporting consistent interest from spring through fall and giving the area year-round appeal.
