Athens, TN

Athens is a small city in McMinn County in southeastern Tennessee, with a population of approximately 14,000 residents. It carries a traditional Southern small-town character, with a walkable historic downtown, locally owned shops and restaurants, and a strong sense of community. The city sits roughly between Knoxville, about 55 miles to the northeast, and Chattanooga, about 60 miles to the southwest, and it functions as a gateway to the outdoor recreation of the Cherokee National Forest and the broader Appalachian foothills.

Just east and south of Athens, the Cherokee National Forest covers more than 650,000 acres across the southern Appalachians and is the largest tract of public land in Tennessee. Access points are typically a 20 to 40 minute drive from the city, and the forest draws visitors for hiking, camping, mountain biking, fishing, and whitewater rafting on the Ocoee and Hiwassee rivers. The Ocoee is particularly notable, having hosted the whitewater events during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

The Hiwassee River flows through McMinn County and is one of Tennessee's most celebrated trout fisheries, with both wild and stocked sections running within a short drive of downtown Athens. Paddlers float the gentler stretches of the river, and the nearby Hiwassee Dam creates a scenic reservoir popular for boating, fishing, and lakeside camping.

About 25 minutes northwest of Athens in the neighboring town of Sweetwater, the Lost Sea is America's largest underground lake, contained within the Craighead Caverns cave system. Guided tours descend into the caverns and end with a boat ride across the lake, drawing families and school groups year-round.

To the east, the Cherohala Skyway is a 43-mile National Scenic Byway that climbs from Tellico Plains, roughly 45 minutes from Athens, into the high mountains along the Tennessee–North Carolina border. The byway is popular with motorcyclists, road cyclists, and autumn leaf-peepers, with several overlooks and trailheads along its length.
