The nearest major city is Augusta, Georgia, which sits roughly 35 to 40 miles to the southeast and offers a full range of urban amenities, including dining, medical care, and an airport.

The dominant draw in the area is J. Strom Thurmond Lake, commonly called Clarks Hill Lake, a sprawling Army Corps of Engineers reservoir that stretches along the Savannah River between South Carolina and Georgia. Covering tens of thousands of acres, the lake is well known for striped bass and hybrid fishing, as well as sailing, kayaking, and long stretches of quiet shoreline. Several public boat ramps, fishing piers, and campgrounds are within a short drive of Clarks Hill, making it a natural anchor for guests who come primarily to be on the water.

Visitors willing to make a longer day trip can also reach the Sumter National Forest, a vast expanse of public land known for hiking, mountain biking, and dispersed camping, within about a 30 to 45 minute drive from Clarks Hill.
