Trujillo Alto, PR

Trujillo Alto is a municipality in the eastern portion of Puerto Rico, a US territory in the Caribbean. Set inland in the island's northern coastal plain, it forms part of the San Juan metropolitan area and has a population of roughly 60,000 residents. The municipality has a largely residential and suburban character, with a mix of established neighborhoods, hilly green spaces, and a few commercial corridors. It is best known as a quieter, more affordable alternative base to nearby San Juan, and it sits just a short drive from the capital's beaches, historic districts, and the island's main international airport, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, which is roughly 20 to 30 minutes to the north.

One of the most recognizable natural features in and around the municipality is Lago Carraízo, a sizable reservoir that serves as an important water source for the San Juan metro area. Locals and visitors alike come to the lake for picnics, jogging, and views of the surrounding hills, with the popular Las Tinajas park area sitting along its shores. The lake is essentially within Trujillo Alto, making it one of the closest outdoor escapes for anyone staying in the area. El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, lies about 45 minutes to an hour's drive to the east. Guests can hike through palm-shaded trails, splash in natural pools such as La Mina, and climb the Yokahú Tower for sweeping views of the coast and surrounding mountains.

To the northwest, about 25 to 35 minutes away depending on traffic, the historic district of Old San Juan offers two of the most photographed sites in the Caribbean: the massive stone ramparts of El Morro and the colorful colonial streets of Calle del Cristo. Its centuries-old forts, blue-cobblestone alleys, and oceanfront promenade make it an easy day trip from a Trujillo Alto rental. Closer still, the beach-lined municipalities of Carolina and Isla Verde are around 20 minutes north, where travelers can spend a day on the sand, sample local food kiosks, or try their hand at surfing.

Trujillo Alto works well as a short-term-rental base precisely because it pairs the calm of a residential Puerto Rican town with quick access to the island's marquee experiences. Guests can return each evening to a quieter neighborhood away from the cruise-ship crowds, while still being within a short drive of the rainforest, the colonial streets of the capital, and some of the best urban beaches in the Caribbean.
