Hatillo, PR

Hatillo is a coastal municipality on the northern shore of Puerto Rico, sitting within the island's northwest agricultural belt and bordering the Atlantic Ocean. With a population of roughly 40,000 residents, it carries the unhurried character of a small Puerto Rican town rooted in farming tradition, particularly dairy production, which is celebrated each year at the well-known Festival de la Vaca Lechera. Travelers pass through on their way along Highway PR-2, the main artery that traces Puerto Rico's northern coast, with the larger municipality of Arecibo to the west and Quebradillas beyond it. Nearby, the Parque Nacional de las Cavernas del Río Camuy is one of the most extensive cave networks in the Western Hemisphere, where visitors can ride a trolley into a vast sinkhole and walk among enormous caverns carved by the Camuy River. The park entrance is roughly 15 to 20 minutes from Hatillo, making it an easy half-day excursion from a rental in town.

Further west, the former Arecibo Observatory site, once home to the world's largest single-aperture telescope before its 2020 collapse, remains a point of interest along the route toward Arecibo, about 30 minutes from Hatillo by car. The surrounding hills and karst countryside also lend themselves to scenic drives through Puerto Rico's interior, where small roadside food stands and fruit stands offer a taste of the region's agricultural identity.
