About Fajardo

Fajardo is a coastal municipality on the eastern edge of Puerto Rico, situated along the island's Atlantic-facing coast in the island's eastern region. It has a population of approximately 32,000 residents and serves as a major gateway to some of the Caribbean's most celebrated offshore islands, including Vieques and Culebra. The city sits about 35 miles east of San Juan, the capital, a roughly one-hour drive via PR-3 and PR-53. With working harbors, marina facilities, and proximity to both rainforest and reef ecosystems, Fajardo blends the feel of a practical small city with easy access to outdoor adventure.

The ferry terminal just outside neighboring Ceiba, only minutes from central Fajardo, is the primary launch point for day trips and overnight stays on the island municipalities of Vieques and Culebra. Travelers depart regularly for Culebra's Flamenco Beach and Vieques' wild horses and bioluminescent bays, both of which rank among the most photographed destinations in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean. The crossing to Culebra takes roughly 45 minutes, and slightly longer to Vieques, making Fajardo a convenient staging ground for island-hopping vacations and often a more affordable lodging base than staying directly on the smaller islands.

Approximately 30 to 40 minutes southwest of town lies El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. Its trails lead to waterfalls such as La Mina and Juan Diego, to observation towers with sweeping views of the northeastern coast, and through a forest canopy that fills with the call of the coquí tree frog at dusk. (El Yunque National Forest) It is one of the most-visited natural attractions in the Caribbean and a common day trip from the eastern coast.

Closer to the city, Seven Seas Beach offers calm, family-friendly swimming along a crescent of soft sand lined with palm trees and modest food kiosks. Just beyond it, the Las Cabezas de San Juan Nature Reserve protects a forested headland, mangrove channels, and the historic El Faro de Las Cabezas de San Juan, a nineteenth-century Spanish-built lighthouse that still functions as a navigational aid. After dark, kayakers paddle into Laguna Grande, one of the world's few reliably bioluminescent lagoons, where microscopic organisms light the water with a pale blue glow on moonless nights.

Fajardo's appeal for short-term-rental owners rests on its dual identity: it is a self-contained coastal town with a vibrant marina culture, a lively dining scene rooted in fresh seafood, and dependable infrastructure, and it is also the doorway to islands, reefs, and rainforests that travelers from around the world come specifically to experience. Guests can spend a morning on a catamaran, an afternoon hiking beneath tree ferns, and an evening watching the water sparkle beneath their kayak, all without having to relocate. That concentration of marquee experiences within a small radius is what makes Fajardo a consistently attractive base for vacation rentals in eastern Puerto Rico.
