Corozal, PR

Corozal is a small mountain municipality tucked into the central interior of Puerto Rico, a US territory in the Caribbean. With a population of roughly 34,000, it carries the nickname "La Capital del Yarey" in recognition of its long tradition of weaving hats, baskets, and other crafts from the leaves of the native yarey palm. Surrounded by the foothills of the Cordillera Central, the town has a quiet, rural character that contrasts with the bustle of the coast, and it sits about 30 miles southwest of San Juan, the island's capital and largest city.

Just outside Corozal, the Toro Negro State Forest offers some of the most dramatic high-country scenery in Puerto Rico. The park sits in the karst country of the island's northwestern interior, roughly an hour and a half from Corozal, where visitors can descend into enormous sinkholes and ride trams through cathedral-like caverns carved out by the Camuy River.

Closer to home, the surrounding Cordillera Central offers a network of smaller mountain roads, roadside fruit stands, and overlooks that give visitors a sense of everyday life in rural Puerto Rico. Neighboring towns such as Barranquitas, Orocovis, and Naranjito host local festivals, traditional food stops, and small central plazas that reward a slow drive, all within roughly 30 minutes of Corozal.

With its central position, mild mountain climate, and proximity to both San Juan and the high country, Corozal appeals to travelers who want a quieter home base from which to explore the interior of the island. Short-term rentals here tend to attract visitors seeking authentic Puerto Rican mountain towns, outdoor adventure in Toro Negro and the central range, and day trips that combine the cave country of the north coast with the cultural traditions of the central highlands, all within easy reach of the capital.
