Añasco is a municipality on the western coast of Puerto Rico, a Caribbean island and US territory. Situated in a valley along the Añasco River, the town sits roughly halfway between the surfing beaches of the northwest and the salt flats of the southwest, with a population of approximately 27,000 residents. It carries the relaxed character of a working western Puerto Rico municipality, with low-rise buildings, a small historic plaza, and a community that has long balanced agriculture with coastal trade. Travelers passing through often use Añasco as a base for exploring the broader Porta del Sol tourism region because of its central position. The larger city of Mayagüez, home to a major university and regional hospital, lies about ten to fifteen minutes to the east, while the capital, San Juan, is roughly two and a half hours east by car.

Just north of Añasco, the town of Rincón draws surfers and beach lovers from around the world, with consistent winter swells and a string of beaches along the Caribbean coastline. The drive from Añasco to the heart of Rincón takes about 25 to 30 minutes along Route 115 and Route 413, and the route itself passes through the foothills that give way to dramatic coastal cliffs and coves. Beyond surfing, Rincón is known for its small beachside restaurants, whale-watching in the winter months, and a casual, walkable downtown along the water.

To the south of Añasco, the municipality of Cabo Rojo offers some of Puerto Rico's most photographed landscapes, including the iconic lighthouse at Los Morrillos, the pink salt flats at Las Salinas, and the calm turquoise waters of Playa Boquerón. The drive from Añasco to the Cabo Rojo lighthouse is roughly 50 to 60 minutes, passing through Mayagüez and along the south coast. Visitors typically pair a day in Cabo Rojo with lunch in the village of Boquerón, where a few blocks of bars and seafood spots sit steps from the beach.

About 30 minutes north of Añasco, the Bosque Estatal de Guajataca provides a more inland experience with hiking trails, a freshwater swimming hole along the Guajataca River, and views of the karst landscape that dominates this stretch of the north coast. The forest is also close to the historic central plaza of Isabela and the dramatic oceanfront of Playa Jobos, both within a short drive.

For short-term-rental owners, Añasco is compelling precisely because it is a quiet, authentic Puerto Rican town positioned within easy reach of three of the island's strongest leisure draws: the surf culture of Rincón, the beaches and scenery of Cabo Rojo, and the urban services of Mayagüez. Guests can stay in a more local setting and still reach major attractions, regional restaurants, and the western airport at Rafael Hernández within about 30 minutes, giving the town an appealing balance of value, accessibility, and character.
