Troutdale Regulations

STRs appear permitted citywide but the lack of specific Troutdale permits, fees, caps, and contact details forces reliance on uncertain state guidance and Portland examples, creating compliance and investment risk.

About Troutdale

Troutdale is a small city in Multnomah County, Oregon, situated at the western entrance to the Columbia River Gorge, just east of the Portland metro area. With a population of roughly 16,000, it carries a quiet, small-town feel while functioning as a key jumping-off point for travelers exploring the gorge and the rest of the Pacific Northwest. Often called the "Gateway to the Columbia River Gorge," Troutdale is a popular first stop for visitors heading east toward waterfalls, hiking trails, and river views. Downtown Portland lies about 15 miles to the west, an easy drive of roughly 25 minutes along Interstate 84.

The biggest draw in the area is the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, which begins almost immediately east of Troutdale. The scenic area stretches for more than 80 miles along the Columbia River and is known for its sheer basalt cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and dense temperate rainforest. Visitors can access trailheads, viewpoints, and windsurfing beaches within minutes of the city, making Troutdale a natural base for outdoor-focused stays. The scenic area is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and protects a remarkable concentration of natural and cultural landmarks.

One of the most iconic destinations within the gorge is Multnomah Falls, the tallest year-round waterfall in the United States at 611 feet. It is located about 25 miles east of Troutdale, roughly a 30- to 35-minute drive, and draws more than two million visitors each year. A short paved walk leads to the Benson Bridge, with the historic Multnomah Falls Lodge offering food, gifts, and interpretive exhibits about the surrounding landscape.

Closer to town, McMenamins Edgefield is a sprawling historic property set on a former poor farm, now operating as a hotel, brewery, distillery, and entertainment venue. Located just minutes from downtown Troutdale, it features multiple restaurants, a movie theater, live music spaces, and lush gardens that welcome both overnight guests and day visitors. The complex has become a regional destination in its own right and adds a distinctive cultural draw to Troutdale's appeal.

Nature lovers also appreciate Oxbow Regional Park, a Metro-owned park about 10 miles east of Troutdale where the Sandy River meets the Columbia. The park offers miles of hiking trails, riverside beaches, and shaded campsites, providing a quiet alternative to the busier viewpoints farther up the gorge.

Troutdale makes a compelling base for short-term rentals because it combines small-town character with unmatched access to some of Oregon's most photographed scenery. Guests can return each evening to a quieter, more affordable setting than downtown Portland while still being within a short drive of waterfalls, wineries, hiking, and the cultural amenities of the larger metro area, creating an ideal balance for travelers who want both convenience and a sense of place.
