About Clackamas

Clackamas is an unincorporated community and suburban area in Clackamas County, Oregon, situated just southeast of Portland in the heart of the Willamette Valley. With a population of roughly 50,000 in the surrounding area, it functions primarily as a residential and commercial suburb rather than a traditional town with its own historic core. Clackamas is best known regionally as the home of Clackamas Town Center, one of the largest shopping destinations in the Portland metropolitan area, and as a convenient base for travelers exploring the greater Pacific Northwest. The community sits approximately 12 miles southeast of downtown Portland, making it an easy commuter hub while also offering quicker access to the Cascade Range, the Columbia River Gorge, and the agricultural communities of the Willamette Valley than many in-city neighborhoods.

Just a few miles west of Clackamas lies Willamette Falls in Oregon City, the second-largest waterfall by volume in the United States and a defining landmark of the region. Oregon City itself, the county seat of Clackamas County and the former capital of the Oregon Territory, is a roughly 10-minute drive from Clackamas and offers a charming historic downtown, the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, and scenic river overlooks. Visitors can stroll along the new Willamette Falls Riverwalk, which provides dramatic views of the cascading water and the historic paper mills on the opposite bank.

About 45 minutes to the east, the slopes of Mount Hood rise into the Cascade Range, offering year-round recreation from summer hiking and wildflower meadows at Timberline Lodge to winter skiing and snowboarding. Timberline Lodge, a National Historic Landmark, sits at approximately 6,000 feet of elevation and is a popular destination for visitors looking to experience the mountain without committing to a full backcountry adventure. Closer to Clackamas, the Clackamas River corridor provides opportunities for fishing, rafting, and riverside picnics within a 30-minute drive.

To the northeast, the Columbia River Gorge is roughly an hour's drive and showcases some of Oregon's most celebrated scenery, including Multnomah Falls and numerous hiking trails, wineries, and viewpoints. The area combines natural beauty with the culinary and cultural amenities of nearby Portland, giving visitors a wide range of day-trip options while staying in a quieter suburban setting.

For short-term-rental owners, Clackamas offers a compelling mix of suburban convenience and regional accessibility. Its proximity to Portland's airport, downtown attractions, the Columbia River Gorge, and Mount Hood allows guests to enjoy a quieter residential base while remaining within easy reach of the Pacific Northwest's most iconic destinations. The community's well-developed infrastructure, shopping, and dining options make it practical for families and groups, while its central location in the Portland metro makes it an efficient launchpad for exploring the wider region.
