Vici, OK

Vici is a small town in Dewey County in northwestern Oklahoma, with a population of roughly 500 residents. It has the laid-back, wide-open character typical of the western prairie, surrounded by wheat fields, cattle pastures, and the rolling terrain that leads toward the Gypsum Hills. The community serves as a quiet base for travelers exploring some of the state's more unusual geological landscapes, and it sits about 130 miles northwest of Oklahoma City, or roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive along US-270 and I-40.

One of the area's marquee draws is Gloss Mountains State Park, often called the "Glass Mountains" for the way its selenite-capped mesas sparkle in the sunlight. The park lies about 20 miles northeast of Vici, just off US-412, and offers short hiking trails, picnic spots, and panoramic views from the top of the flat-topped bluffs, which can look almost otherworldly against the surrounding plains.

A second notable stop is the Selman Bat Cave and the surrounding Selman Living Laboratory, located roughly 15 to 20 miles northwest of town near the Cimarron River. The site is a major summer home for Mexican free-tailed bats, and on select evenings visitors can watch enormous columns of bats spiral out of the cave at dusk — one of the most impressive wildlife spectacles in the southern plains. The University of Central Oklahoma manages guided programs, and reservations are typically required during the viewing season.

Southeast of Vici, about an hour's drive via state highways, Roman Nose State Park near Watonga offers a different flavor of Oklahoma outdoors. The park sits in a bend of the North Canadian River and features gypsum-canyon scenery, spring-fed creeks, a lodge, a small lake for fishing, and a challenging 18-hole golf course. It also ties into the cultural heritage of the area, as it is associated with the traditional lands of the Southern Cheyenne.

Vici's appeal for short-term rental investors lies in its location at the intersection of several of Oklahoma's most distinctive natural attractions. Travelers heading out to the Gloss Mountains, the bat viewing at Selman, or Roman Nose often need an overnight stop, and the town is close enough to all three to serve as a comfortable hub. With its quiet small-town feel, easy highway access, and proximity to landscapes that feel surprisingly far from everyday life, Vici offers a niche but dependable base for guests exploring this lesser-visited corner of the state.
