Buckeye Lake Regulations

Buckeye Lake explicitly allows STRs with a clear, structured 10-step licensing process, but requires significant upfront investment including electrical/fire inspections, $500K liability insurance, Knox Homebox installation, and 60-day processing. The regulatory framework is transparent with manageable requirements, though the comprehensive oversight and operational standards create moderate compliance costs rather than being prohibitive.

About Buckeye Lake

Buckeye Lake is a small village in central Ohio, situated primarily in Licking County with portions extending into Fairfield and Perry counties. The village wraps around the northern shore of the 3,100-acre Buckeye Lake, the man-made reservoir that gives the community its name and its identity. With a population of roughly 2,900 residents, Buckeye Lake is best known as a nostalgic Midwestern summer destination, where weekend cottages, a refurbished state park, and a working boating scene draw visitors from across Ohio and beyond. It sits approximately 35 miles east of Columbus, Ohio's state capital and largest city, making it a convenient drive for weekend getaways from the Columbus metro and the broader central Ohio region.

Buckeye Lake State Park is the centerpiece of the area, encircling most of the lake with public docks, boat ramps, picnic areas, and a swimming beach. The park underwent a major rehabilitation in the late 2010s following a dam reconstruction project, and today it offers updated facilities for fishing, paddling, and powerboating on waters that have welcomed recreation seekers since the 19th century. The lake is a popular spot for crappie, bass, and catfish fishing, and its roughly nine miles of shoreline are lined with a mix of historic cottages, modern lake homes, and waterfront restaurants. Visitors can access the park from the village in just a few minutes by car or on foot.

Just a short drive north, the city of Newark serves as the seat of Licking County and offers a surprising concentration of cultural and natural attractions. The Newark Earthworks, a complex of geometric mounds built by the Hopewell culture more than 1,500 years ago, is one of the most significant pre-Columbian archaeological sites in North America and a designated National Historic Landmark. The adjacent Dawes Arboretum spreads across nearly 2,000 acres of woodlands, gardens, and walking trails, and welcomes visitors year-round. Both sites are within about 15 minutes of Buckeye Lake, making the village a comfortable base for exploring the wider Licking County region.

Further afield, the rolling forests of the Hocking Hills region lie roughly an hour to the southeast, offering hiking, dramatic rock formations, and state-park scenery for guests willing to make a day trip. Closer to home, the village of Millersport on the lake's southern shore hosts a long-running Labor Day sweet corn festival and small-town charm that captures the easygoing pace of central Ohio lake country. With its combination of water recreation, proximity to Columbus, and access to a wide range of regional attractions, Buckeye Lake offers a versatile setting for short-term rental owners looking to capture both summer lake traffic and shoulder-season visitors drawn to central Ohio's history and natural beauty.
