Interlaken is a small village in Seneca County in the heart of New York's Finger Lakes region, sitting in the narrow strip of land between Seneca Lake to the west and Cayuga Lake to the east. With a population of roughly 600 residents, the village has the quiet, unhurried character of a rural community surrounded by rolling vineyards, farmland, and wooded hills. The most distinctive natural attraction in the area is the Finger Lakes National Forest, one of only two national forests in New York State. Located in the town of Hector in neighboring Schuyler County, it sits about 15 miles southwest of Interlaken and offers roughly 16,000 acres of hiking trails, backcountry campsites, and working farmland that doubles as wildlife habitat. About 25 minutes south of Interlaken, Taughannock Falls State Park on the western shore of Cayuga Lake protects a 400-foot waterfall that drops into a deep gorge and is taller than Niagara Falls. The park has a swimming beach, boat launch, and campground, and the rim and gorge trails draw visitors throughout the warmer months. The nearby town of Trumansburg adds a handful of restaurants, breweries, and small inns that complement a day spent at the falls.

A bit farther southwest, roughly 30 miles from Interlaken, lies Watkins Glen State Park at the southern end of Seneca Lake. Famous for its narrow stone gorge threaded with waterfalls and stone stairways, the park is one of the most photographed landscapes in the Northeast and draws large crowds from late spring through fall. The village of Watkins Glen, with its harbor, racing history, and lakefront dining, makes a natural pairing with a visit to the gorge.

The village's appeal for short-term rental owners rests on this combination: a small, low-key community that nonetheless places guests within easy driving distance of two of New York's most-visited state parks, a working national forest, dozens of wineries, and the cultural offerings of Ithaca and the surrounding Finger Lakes corridor, all without the noise and crowding of a major tourist town.
