East Aurora, NY

Aurora is a small, tree-shaded village in Cayuga County, New York, tucked along the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake in the heart of the Finger Lakes. With a population of roughly 700 residents, it has the unhurried character of a traditional college town, anchored by Wells College, a liberal arts institution founded in 1868 whose handsome campus of 19th-century brick buildings defines much of the village's architectural identity. Aurora is best known as a quiet entry point to the Cayuga Lake wine trail and the surrounding lake-and-gorge landscape, and it lies about 45 miles south of Syracuse and roughly 12 miles south of Auburn, the county seat.

The most obvious draw is the lake itself. Cayuga Lake, one of the longest of the Finger Lakes, stretches more than 35 miles from end to end and is reachable within minutes of the village center. Visitors come for sailing, paddling, lakeside dining, and a string of tasting rooms that flank the eastern shore as part of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, one of the most established in the region.

Just south of the village, Long Point State Park – Finger Lakes protects nearly 90 acres of lakeshore at the tip of a peninsula jutting into Cayuga Lake. About a 10-minute drive from Aurora, the park offers a small beach, picnic areas, hiking trails, and seasonal boat launches, making it a convenient spot for an afternoon of swimming or a quiet walk along the water.

The village is also a draw for design-minded travelers thanks to MacKenzie-Childs, the home furnishings and ceramics company whose flagship store, design studios, and café occupy a former hotel building in the center of Aurora. The campus-style complex is open year-round and offers tours, seasonal events, and a small working farm, giving visitors a reason to linger in the village even on rainy days.

Slightly farther afield, the city of Ithaca lies about 30 miles to the south, anchoring the southern tip of the lake with Ithaca Falls, the Cornell University campus, and access to nearby gorges and Taughannock Falls State Park, where a 215-foot waterfall drops into a deep wooded gorge. Day-trippers based in Aurora can reach all of these in well under an hour.
