About Boulder City

Boulder City is a small, sun-baked municipality in Clark County, Nevada, home to roughly 16,000 residents. Set in the Mojave Desert about 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, the city carries a noticeably quieter, small-town character. Unusually for Nevada, gambling is prohibited within city limits, which contributes to a relaxed atmosphere that contrasts with the bustle of the Las Vegas Strip. Boulder City was built in the 1930s to house the workers constructing the Hoover Dam, and that industrial heritage continues to shape the town's identity, its historic architecture, and its economy. Today the city functions largely as a base for visitors exploring the dam, the reservoir behind it, and the surrounding desert landscapes.

The Hoover Dam itself sits just outside town, about seven miles to the south and roughly a fifteen-minute drive from the city center. One of the most photographed engineering works in the United States, the concrete arch-gravity dam spans the Black Canyon of the Colorado River and draws millions of visitors each year. Travelers can tour the powerplant, walk across the top of the dam, and cross the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge for sweeping views.

Just a few minutes north of town lies the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, the sprawling reservoir and surrounding desert managed by the National Park Service. Lake Mead offers boating, swimming, kayaking, and fishing in the warmer months, along with scenic drives, hiking trails, and a handful of marinas tucked into its many coves. Because Boulder City sits at the western edge of the recreation area, guests can reach several launch points and overlooks in well under twenty minutes.

Boulder City's historic downtown, anchored by Arizona Street and the surrounding blocks, is a draw in its own right. The walkable core holds a mix of antique shops, art galleries, cafes, and locally owned restaurants, many housed in original 1930s buildings constructed for the dam workers. A short stroll reveals the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum, murals honoring the dam's construction, and a handful of public parks shaded by mature trees, offering a respite from the desert sun.

Just west of town, Bootleg Canyon has become a popular outdoor-recreation hub, with a network of mountain-biking and hiking trails carved into the rugged hillsides. The area is also known for its zipline courses and as the site of a well-known annual mountain-bike race. For travelers seeking a more resort-style setting, Lake Las Vegas, a man-made lake and master-planned community with waterfront dining and golf, is only about ten minutes away.

For short-term rental operators, Boulder City offers an appealing combination of small-town charm, a steady year-round flow of visitors drawn by Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, and an easy drive to Las Vegas. Its quiet streets, walkable downtown, and proximity to some of southern Nevada's most recognizable outdoor destinations make it a natural fit for guests who want to explore the region without staying in the city itself.
