About Ranchos De Taos

Ranchos de Taos is a small, centuries-old village in northern New Mexico, situated in Taos County just a few miles south of the town of Taos. With a population of roughly 2,500 residents, it has the unhurried feel of a traditional Southwestern community, where adobe homes line quiet streets and the high desert landscape of sage and piñon surrounds the village. The community is best known for its deep Hispanic and Pueblo cultural heritage, its historic adobe architecture, and its role as a gateway to the greater Taos area, including the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Rio Grande Gorge, and the Taos Pueblo. It sits about 85 miles northeast of Santa Fe, the nearest large city, and roughly the same distance from the Colorado state line.

The most iconic landmark in the village is the San Francisco de Asís Mission Church, a massive adobe church completed in the late 18th century and considered one of the finest examples of Spanish colonial architecture in the United States. The church's thick buttressed walls, sculpted wooden doors, and serene interior have drawn painters, photographers, and travelers for generations, including Ansel Adams and Georgia O'Keeffe, who painted it repeatedly. It is located right in the heart of Ranchos de Taos, within walking distance of most points in the village.

Just a short drive north of the village, the Taos Pueblo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in North America, with multi-storied adobe dwellings that have been home to the Taos people for more than a thousand years. It is roughly a 15-minute drive north of Ranchos de Taos, and visitors are welcomed to explore its grounds, art markets, and cultural events.

To the west, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge rises about 650 feet above the Rio Grande and offers sweeping views of the deep basalt canyon cut by the river. The bridge and its overlook are about a 20-minute drive from the village and serve as a starting point for hiking, rafting, and exploring the wild landscape of the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument.

Ranchos de Taos is a compelling base for short-term rentals because it offers the cultural depth, scenic beauty, and outdoor recreation of the Taos region at a quieter, more residential pace than the busier town of Taos itself. Guests can step out of a restored adobe casita to find a centuries-old mission, a thriving local arts scene, and quick drives to mountains, rivers, and historic pueblos, all while being just a short distance from one of New Mexico's most celebrated cultural destinations.
