About Cloudcroft

Cloudcroft is a small mountain village in Otero County, New Mexico, with a year-round population of roughly 700 to 800 residents. Perched at about 8,650 feet in the Sacramento Mountains, it has a cool, alpine feel that stands in sharp contrast to the Chihuahuan Desert and Tularosa Basin below, which is why generations of southern New Mexicans and west Texans have treated it as a high-country escape. The village grew up around the El Paso and Northeastern Railroad in the late 1800s, and that timber-and-tourism heritage still shapes its character today, with an old lodge, a historic pavilion, and an inviting walkable downtown. Cloudcroft serves as the primary gateway into the Sacramento Mountains and the surrounding Lincoln National Forest. The nearest major city is El Paso, Texas, roughly 90 to 95 miles to the southeast, with a drive of about an hour and a half over the mountains and across the basin.

One of the marquee draws within easy reach is White Sands National Park, the world's largest gypsum dunefield, where visitors can hike, sled, and drive among brilliant white dunes. The park's main entrance sits just outside Alamogordo, about 35 to 40 miles southwest of Cloudcroft, which translates to a roughly 50-minute to one-hour drive down the mountain and across the desert floor. It is a strong pairing with a Cloudcroft stay, since guests can spend cool mornings among pines and warm afternoons on the dunes.

Surrounding the village on all sides, Lincoln National Forest provides the backdrop for much of the area's appeal. Within a short drive or even a walk from the center of town, visitors can access hiking and biking trails, picnic areas, and campgrounds set among ponderosa pine, fir, and aspen, with cooler temperatures and occasional snow that make it a year-round outdoor destination. The forest also connects Cloudcroft to higher-elevation scenic drives, including the road up to Sunspot and the Sacramento Mountains Observatory area to the east.

To the north, the Lincoln National Forest wraps around the Mescalero Apache Reservation and Ski Apache, a mountain resort known for its long runs, stunning views, and as the only ski area in southern New Mexico. The drive from Cloudcroft to Ski Apache runs about 70 to 80 miles through winding mountain roads and typically takes around an hour and a half, making it feasible for a long day trip in winter. Closer to town, the Mexican Canyon Trestle, a towering wooden railroad bridge on a short hiking loop, gives a glimpse of the rail line that put Cloudcroft on the map more than a century ago.

Taken together, Cloudcroft's high-elevation setting, forested setting, and proximity to a true national treasure like White Sands make it a natural base for short-term rentals. Guests get a quiet, walkable mountain village with restaurants, galleries, and trail access right outside the door, plus day trips to dunes, forests, and a downhill ski area, all within a couple of hours of a major metropolitan airport.
