A short drive from the village brings visitors to the base of the Mount Washington Cog Railway, the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway and a National Historic Engineering Landmark. From its depot, the train ascends to the summit of Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the Northeast at 6,288 feet, passing through several distinct climate zones along the way. In winter, the Bretton Woods ski resort — one of the oldest continually operating ski areas in the country — provides alpine skiing, Nordic trails, and a snow tubing park right in the village.
