Valentine, NE

Valentine is a small city in north-central Nebraska and the county seat of Cherry County. Home to roughly 2,700 residents, the town has a warm, outdoorsy, small-town character and embraces a playful "Heart City" identity tied to its name. It is best known as the principal gateway to the Niobrara River valley and the broader Sandhills region of north-central Nebraska. The nearest major metropolitan area is Omaha, located approximately 280 miles to the southeast, with North Platte lying roughly 120 miles to the southwest along U.S. Highway 83.

The Niobrara National Scenic River is the area's signature attraction. Established in 1912, the refuge is home to free-ranging bison, elk, and Texas longhorn cattle, and a scenic auto tour loop lets visitors see these herds up close. The refuge sits only a short drive east of downtown Valentine and pairs naturally with a visit to the river.

Smith Falls State Park, about 20 minutes north of Valentine, protects Smith Falls, the tallest waterfall in Nebraska at roughly 63 feet, where the Niobrara River tumbles over a layered limestone outcrop. The park is one of the most popular launching points for float trips on the scenic river and offers camping, hiking, and wide-open stargazing in the surrounding Sandhills sky.

About 35 miles southwest of town, Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area centers on a large reservoir known for clean water, sandy beaches, and one of Nebraska's few true sand dunes. Boating, fishing, and swimming draw families throughout the warmer months, and the area is one of the most popular summer destinations in the region.

Valentine's appeal as a short-term rental base rests on a straightforward formula: a charming small town surrounded by four major outdoor destinations, all within roughly 35 miles.
