Wilkesboro, NC

Wilkesboro is the county seat of Wilkes County, in the northwestern corner of North Carolina, with a population of approximately 3,500 residents. Set in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the small town has a laid-back, distinctly Appalachian character and a compact historic downtown that anchors the community. It is best known as a gateway to outdoor recreation in the surrounding mountains and as the home of MerleFest, one of the Southeast's most celebrated folk and roots music festivals. Wilkesboro sits roughly 80 miles northwest of Charlotte and about 50 miles west of Winston-Salem, placing it within easy reach of major metropolitan areas while still feeling worlds away from the city.

Stone Mountain State Park lies about 20 miles west of Wilkesboro and showcases one of the most striking geological features in the region: a 600-foot granite dome that rises dramatically from the surrounding countryside. The park offers more than 18 miles of hiking trails, backcountry campsites, and designated trout waters along the tumbling cascades at the base of the mountain, and visitors can also explore a preserved nineteenth-century homestead on site.

The W. Kerr Scott Reservoir sits just minutes north of town and serves as a centerpiece for outdoor recreation in the area. The roughly 1,500-acre lake is popular for sailing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing, while the surrounding public lands include miles of shoreline trails and a dedicated off-road vehicle area. It is a common weekend escape for both locals and visitors.

Wilkes Community College, located in Wilkesboro, is the home of MerleFest, an annual four-day Americana and roots music festival held each April that draws tens of thousands of visitors to the area. The festival honors the legacy of the late Merle Watson, son of folk legend Doc Watson, and has grown into one of the most respected roots-music events in the country.

The famous Blue Ridge Parkway winds through the high country to the north of Wilkesboro, with the Doughton Park section and the parkway's Stone Mountain access point both reachable within about a 30- to 45-minute drive. This stretch of the parkway is renowned for fall foliage, sweeping overlooks, and the kind of slow-paced driving experience that defines the route, and it makes an easy day trip from a Wilkesboro base.
