Vilas, NC

Vilas is a small unincorporated mountain community tucked into the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, sitting in Watauga County in the region locals call the High Country. With only a few hundred residents, it has the quiet, woodsy character of a rural Appalachian hamlet rather than a town, and visitors come through primarily because of its setting and its proximity to some of the most popular outdoor destinations in the southern Appalachians. The mountain rises more than 5,000 feet and is part of the UNESCO-designated Southern Appalachians biosphere region, with a nature preserve, a wildlife habitats area featuring bald eagles and cougars, and several miles of rugged hiking trails. From Vilas, the main gate is roughly a 30-minute drive northeast along well-paved country roads and a short section of the parkway.

Closer to home, the larger town of Boone is only about 10 to 15 minutes away, offering restaurants, breweries, live music, and the cultural energy of Appalachian State University. Boone also acts as the practical base for supplies, dining, and entertainment, with attractions like Tweetsie Railroad and the Tweetsie Railroad theme park, Doc's Rocks Gem Mining, and a lively downtown green all within easy reach of Vilas. In the other direction, the ski resorts at Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain are about 30 to 40 minutes away, making Vilas a year-round launchpad for both summer hiking getaways and winter ski trips.

For short-term rental owners, Vilas offers a compelling combination of small-community quiet and immediate access to the High Country's biggest draws.
