About Nags Head

Nags Head is a small coastal town on North Carolina's Outer Banks, situated in Dare County on the barrier island chain that arcs along the state's Atlantic shoreline. The year-round population hovers around 3,000 residents, though the town swells dramatically during the warmer months when beachgoers descend on its wide, sandy beaches. With a laid-back, salt-air atmosphere and a long-standing identity as one of the Outer Banks' original resort communities, Nags Head is best known as a gateway to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and as a natural jumping-off point for exploring the rest of the Outer Banks. It lies roughly 80 to 90 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia — about a two-hour drive depending on traffic at the bridges and tunnels — and several hours east of North Carolina's inland population centers.

One of the most recognizable landmarks in town is Jockey's Ridge State Park, home to the tallest active sand dune system on the East Coast. The park's massive, windswept dunes offer hang gliding lessons, sunset views over both the Roanoke Sound and the Atlantic, and a popular boardwalk trail that begins right in Nags Head, making it an easy walk or short drive from most rental properties in the area.

Just a few minutes north along the beach road, in neighboring Kill Devil Hills, sits the Wright Brothers National Memorial, a granite monument marking the site of the Wright brothers' first powered flight in 1903. The visitor center, a full-scale reproduction of the 1903 Flyer, and the hilltop memorial are all part of a National Park Service site that draws aviation enthusiasts and families year-round.

Heading south from Nags Head, visitors enter the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which protects more than 70 miles of beach, dunes, and maritime forest. The seashore's northern anchor is the black-and-white striped Bodie Island Lighthouse, a short drive away, while the full span of the park reaches all the way down to Hatteras Village, offering some of the most unspoiled beaches on the Atlantic coast.

Across the Roanoke Sound to the west, roughly a 30-minute drive, Roanoke Island hosts Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, which preserves the story of the "Lost Colony" of 1587, as well as the outdoor drama and the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, both popular stops for visitors staying in Nags Head.

With its central Outer Banks location, mix of natural landmarks and historic sites, and a beach community that draws families, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts season after season, Nags Head offers short-term rental owners a steady, well-rounded base from which guests can easily reach the full sweep of the Outer Banks' best-known attractions.
