Kitty Hawk is a small coastal town in Dare County, North Carolina, set along the narrow barrier island chain of the Outer Banks. The town is best known as one of the sites associated with the Wright Brothers' first powered flight in 1903, and it serves as a gateway to the broader Outer Banks, a roughly 200-mile stretch of barrier islands prized for their beaches, wildlife refuges, and historic lighthouses. Just a few minutes south of Kitty Hawk in neighboring Kill Devil Hills stands the Wright Brothers National Memorial, the marquee attraction of the area. The drive south through Hatteras village and onto Ocracoke Island is a scenic one in its own right.

To the north, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse rises above the historic Whalehead in Currituck Heritage Park in Corolla, roughly 40 minutes from Kitty Hawk by car. The red-brick lighthouse, the northernmost on the Outer Banks, can be climbed seasonally, and the surrounding area is a launch point for wild horse tours along the four-wheel-drive beaches leading up to the Virginia border.
