Kill Devil Hills is a small coastal town in Dare County, North Carolina, set on the Outer Banks, a string of narrow barrier islands that arc along the state's Atlantic shore. With a year-round population of roughly 7,500 residents, the community swells significantly each summer as visitors arrive for its wide sandy beaches, easygoing boardwalk culture, and temperate shoulder seasons. Best known as the site where the Wright Brothers completed the first sustained powered flights in December 1903, Kill Devil Hills also functions as a convenient gateway to the wider Outer Banks. The nearest major city is Norfolk, Virginia, located about 85 miles to the northwest across the Currituck and Albemarle sounds, while Raleigh, the state capital, sits roughly 180 miles to the west.

The marquee attraction within the town itself is the Wright Brothers National Memorial, perched on a low rise at the northern end of Kill Devil Hills. The site preserves the brothers' camp buildings, commemorates their four flights of December 17, 1903, and includes a granite boulder marking the takeoff point of that first twelve-second flight, plus a tall pylon standing atop Big Kill Devil Hill. Visitors can explore interpretive exhibits in the visitor center, walk the flight path, and climb the hill for sweeping views of dune and sea. The memorial is only a few minutes' drive from nearly any rental in town.

Just south of the town limits lies Jockey's Ridge State Park, home to the tallest active sand dune system on the East Coast. The shifting dunes rise and reshape themselves with the wind, creating a dramatic landscape that visitors can hike across or climb for panoramic views of the Atlantic to the east and Roanoke Sound to the west. The park is a popular launching point for hang gliders, and a short nature trail leads through an adjacent maritime forest. From most points in Kill Devil Hills, the park entrance is only a few minutes away.

About twenty miles southwest, across the Washington Baum Bridge, Roanoke Island offers a different sort of day trip. The island is home to Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, which interprets the 1587 English "Lost Colony" and the earlier Roanoke voyages, and it hosts the long-running outdoor drama of the same name each summer. Nearby Manteo features a walkable waterfront, small galleries, and the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, giving visitors a cultural counterpoint to the beach experience.

With its central Outer Banks location, walkable beachfront blocks, and proximity to some of the coast's most recognizable landmarks, Kill Devil Hills offers a well-rounded base for short-term rentals.
