The town's namesake is the Blowing Rock, a sheer cliff overlook where updrafts off the Johns River Gorge are strong enough to return lightweight objects tossed from the platform back toward the thrower. The park is one of the High Country's marquee draws, particularly in autumn when the surrounding hardwood forests turn color, and it pairs naturally with a stop in nearby Linville, where Linville Caverns and the seasonal Linn Cove Viaduct round out a classic Blue Ridge Parkway loop.

Just south of town, the Blue Ridge Parkway snakes through the area and gives almost immediate access to the Moses H. Cone Memorial Park, a former estate featuring Flat Top Manor, miles of old carriage roads now used for hiking and horseback riding, and trout-stocked lakes. For families, Tweetsie Railroad sits right at the edge of town, offering a Wild West-themed amusement park built around a narrow-gauge heritage railroad that runs excursions into the surrounding forest.

Blowing Rock's combination of small-town charm, year-round appeal, and proximity to some of the most visited natural attractions in the southern Appalachians makes it a particularly strong base for short-term rentals. Visitors can spend mornings hiking the Cone carriage trails, afternoons on the swinging bridge at Grandfather Mountain, and evenings dining on Main Street, all without venturing far from a comfortable mountain cottage, which keeps both occupancy rates and nightly rates among the highest in the region.
