Columbus, MT

Columbus is a small town of roughly 1,800 residents in Stillwater County, in south-central Montana. It sits along Interstate 90, about 40 miles west of Billings, the state's largest city, and serves as a handy rest stop and launching point for travelers heading south into the Beartooth Mountains and the surrounding high country. The town has a laid-back, rural Western character shaped by ranching and the Stillwater River, which flows past the main strip and gives the community its name.

Red Lodge itself is a well-preserved historic mining town that has become a year-round mountain destination. Its brick-fronted Main Street is lined with restaurants, galleries, and shops, and the surrounding slopes host skiing at Red Lodge Mountain in winter and mountain biking and hiking in summer. The town sits at the foot of the Beartooth Highway, which has been called one of the most scenic drives in North America, climbing to more than 10,000 feet before descending into the northeast corner of Yellowstone National Park on the Wyoming border.

Although Yellowstone lies roughly 100 miles to the south, Columbus is frequently used as an overnight stop for travelers taking the Beartooth Highway route into the park, especially in summer when the alpine meadows bloom with wildflowers.
