About Grayling

Grayling is a small city in Crawford County in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, home to approximately 1,800 residents. With a quiet, outdoorsy character and a downtown shaped by its long relationship with the surrounding forests and rivers, the community has long served as a gateway to the Au Sable River and the trout fishing waters that draw anglers from across the Midwest. It sits along Interstate 75 roughly 65 miles southeast of Traverse City, placing it within easy reach of both the Traverse Bay region and the larger hubs of mid-Michigan.

The Au Sable River is the defining feature of the area, and the stretch that runs through and around Grayling is celebrated for some of the best trout fishing in the eastern United States. The river is divided into distinct sections with seasonal designations, and the catch-and-release reaches near town are well known among fly anglers. In addition to fishing, the river draws canoeists, kayakers, and tubers during the warmer months, with outfitters in town providing rentals and shuttles for day trips down its gentle bends.

Just north of town, Hartwick Pines State Park preserves one of the last remaining stands of virgin white pine forest in Michigan, with towering trees that predate the logging era that shaped the region. About a 20-minute drive from downtown, the park offers hiking trails, a historic CCC-era log lodge, and the Michigan Forest Visitors Center, which interprets the history of the lumber industry that once dominated northern Michigan. The mix of big trees, easy walking paths, and interpretive programming makes it a popular stop for visitors of all ages.

A short drive further north, North Higgins Lake State Park wraps around the clear waters of Higgins Lake, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful inland lakes in the state. The park offers swimming, boating, and a paved campground, and the lake itself is known for its exceptionally clean water and sandy bottom. Together with the surrounding state forest lands, it gives visitors a classic northern Michigan lake experience within easy reach of Grayling.

Grayling makes a compelling base for short-term rentals because it combines small-town affordability with access to some of northern Michigan's most recognizable outdoor assets. Visitors can spend the morning on the Au Sable, the afternoon hiking among old-growth pines, and the evening back in a quiet neighborhood within walking distance of local restaurants, all while staying within a reasonable drive of Traverse City, Gaylord, and the larger recreational corridors of the Lower Peninsula. That blend of year-round outdoor appeal and small-town character gives the area steady appeal for travelers seeking a slower-paced Michigan getaway.
