Frankfort Regulations

Frankfort clearly permits STRs citywide but requires a separate annual permit per unit, fire inspections every 3 years, proof of insurance, safety equipment compliance, and a 24/7 local contact; while these add cost and process, the owner cap of 3 units, reasonable occupancy/parking limits, and tiered penalty structure with revocation only after repeated violations make compliance predictable and manageable for investors.

About Frankfort

Frankfort is a small coastal city in Benzie County, in the northwestern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, with a population of approximately 1,300 people. Perched on a natural harbor where Betsie Lake meets Lake Michigan, the town has the feel of a quiet, walkable resort community, with a sandy public beach, a historic downtown, and a steady rhythm of fishing boats and pleasure craft coming and going from the pier. Frankfort is best known as a southern gateway to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and to the broader Benzie County stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline. The nearest major city is Grand Rapids, about 100 miles to the southeast, while the larger regional center of Traverse City lies roughly 45 miles to the northeast.

Just south of Frankfort, along the Lake Michigan shoreline, Point Betsie Lighthouse marks the transition between the county's inland lakes and the open Great Lakes. Built in 1858, it is one of the older lighthouses along this coast and is celebrated for its distinctive design, with the tower rising directly from an attached keeper's dwelling. The site, which is about a ten-minute drive from downtown Frankfort, is operated seasonally as a museum and offers broad views across the dune-backed shoreline.

A short drive north brings visitors to the region's marquee draw: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, roughly 30 to 40 minutes from Frankfort. The park is famous for its towering bluffs of sand overlooking Lake Michigan, the dune-rimmed shoreline of Glen Lake, and the historic farming community of Glen Haven. Travelers come for the scenic overlooks along Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, the clifftop hiking trails, and the ferry to South Manitou Island, all of which help make the park one of the most-visited units in the National Park System.

To the east of town, Crystal Lake stretches across the rolling hills of Benzie County and is the largest inland lake located entirely within Michigan. Its exceptionally clear water gives it a deep blue appearance that has long drawn summer visitors for swimming, sailing, and fishing. Public access points ring the lake, several of which are within a 10- to 15-minute drive of downtown Frankfort, and the surrounding small resort communities add to the area's vacation feel.

Frankfort's appeal for short-term rental owners lies in this pairing: a compact, characterful town with its own beach, harbor, and dining scene, set within easy reach of a Great Lakes national park and one of the state's most beautiful inland lakes. That combination of small-town atmosphere and access to marquee natural attractions makes it a natural fit for travelers planning a northern Michigan getaway.
