Towns such as Caseville and Port Austin sit within roughly an hour's drive and offer small-harbor charm, sandy public beaches, and sunset views over open water. Caseville in particular is associated with the annual Cheeseburger in Caseville festival, one of the more unusual summer draws in eastern Michigan, while Port Austin draws visitors for its turn-of-the-century resort character and proximity to the tip of the Thumb.

Sleeper State Park, located near Caseville, is a popular year-round destination about 40 miles from Caro, with nearly 2 miles of Lake Huron frontage, a modern campground, and trails through old-growth cedar and hardwoods. A bit further north, Port Crescent State Park offers a wilder, dune-backed beach and access to the Pinnebog River, appealing to visitors who want a quieter shoreline experience. Both parks are typical Thumb escapes for swimming, kayaking, birding, and stargazing well away from urban light.

Back in town, the Tuscola County Courthouse anchors the compact downtown, and the surrounding blocks include locally owned diners, antique shops, and farm-supply stores that give Caro its small-town identity. The Tuscola County Fair, held each summer at the fairgrounds on the edge of the village, has been a regional tradition for more than a century and draws visitors from across the Thumb.

Caro is a compelling base for short-term rentals precisely because of its central, unhurried location.
