About Alpena

Alpena is a small but storied city of roughly 10,000 residents in northeastern Michigan, serving as the seat of Alpena County and the principal urban hub along the Lake Huron shoreline in that part of the state. The city sits on Thunder Bay, a broad inlet of Lake Huron, and is widely known as a base for freshwater recreation, shipwreck diving, lighthouse touring, and visits to nearby state parks. Its downtown has a quiet, working-port feel, with brick storefronts, a historic band shell, and a year-round calendar of maritime-themed events. Alpena lies approximately 250 miles north of Detroit and roughly 200 miles south of the Mackinac Bridge, making it a natural stopover for travelers working their way along the Great Lakes coastline.

A few miles north of downtown, the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary protects one of the best-preserved collections of shipwrecks in the Great Lakes, with more than fifty known wreck sites resting beneath the waters of Thunder Bay. The sanctuary's Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, located on the Alpena waterfront, offers exhibits on the region's nautical history and serves as the jumping-off point for glass-bottom boat tours that visit some of the most intact wrecks just off the Lake Huron shoreline.

Further north along the coast, the Presque Isle peninsula juts out into Lake Huron and is home to a pair of historic lighthouses, the Old Presque Isle Light and the New Presque Isle Light, both of which are open to visitors during the warmer months. The peninsula's shoreline, campground, and rocky beaches draw visitors seeking a quieter, more rugged Lake Huron experience, and it sits roughly twenty minutes by car from downtown Alpena.

South of the city, Rockport State Park includes a 300-acre former limestone quarry that has filled with groundwater to form a vivid turquoise lake, along with one of the few stands of petrified trees in the eastern United States. About a twenty-minute drive from Alpena, the park offers hiking trails, picnic areas, and a popular spot for fossil hunting in the surrounding shale beds.

With its blend of small-town character, lakefront setting, and a steady flow of visitors drawn by the marine sanctuary, the lighthouses, and the surrounding state parks, Alpena offers short-term rental owners a base that caters to road-trippers, scuba divers, lighthouse enthusiasts, and families exploring the Lake Huron coast.
