Allegan Regulations

STRs are explicitly permitted, but investors face moderate hurdles: a $325 annual registration in Casco Township, potential health inspections, and City zoning processes that may require special use permits. Caps are modest (3‑day minimum stay, 12‑guest occupancy) and enforcement appears consistent, keeping compliance manageable and investment feasible.

About Allegan

Allegan is a small city in southwestern Michigan that serves as the county seat of Allegan County, with a population of roughly 5,000 residents. Tucked along the Kalamazoo River, the city has the feel of a classic Midwestern river town, with a walkable historic downtown, tree-lined streets, and a relaxed pace that contrasts with the busier Lake Michigan shoreline to the west. It is best known as an inland gateway to the popular Saugatuck and Douglas arts-and-beach community, and as a base for visitors exploring the broader West Michigan lakeshore, vineyards, and forests. Allegan sits about 30 miles southwest of Grand Rapids, the nearest major city, with Kalamazoo roughly 30 miles to the south.

One of the region's marquee draws is the nearby Saugatuck–Douglas area, a Lake Michigan harbor town celebrated for its galleries, restaurants, and dune-backed beaches. From downtown Allegan, the drive to Saugatuck takes about 25 to 30 minutes heading northwest, and visitors are rewarded with Oval Beach, the Saugatuck Dunes State Park, and a lively arts scene that has made the town a long-standing Midwest summer destination. Saugatuck itself is a well-documented place, and a useful starting point for visitors is its Wikipedia entry.

Just outside Allegan, the Allegan State Game Area covers tens of thousands of acres of state-managed forest, wetland, and river bottomland. It is one of the largest contiguous public land tracts in southwestern Michigan and offers hunting, fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing, with the Kalamazoo River winding through much of it. The game area begins only a few minutes from the city limits, making it a convenient outdoor escape for short-term guests.

To the northwest, the Lake Michigan shoreline is reachable in roughly 30 to 40 minutes, opening up communities such as Holland and South Haven, along with the state parks, lighthouses, and sandy beaches that define this stretch of coast. Inland, the surrounding countryside is dotted with small wineries, cideries, and farm stands, particularly around Fennville and the nearby fruit-belt region, where visitors can sample local vintages and seasonal produce within a short drive of the city.

Allegan's appeal as a short-term-rental base comes from its combination of small-town character and proximity to some of West Michigan's most-visited destinations. Guests can stay in a quieter, more affordable setting than the lakeshore towns themselves while remaining within a short drive of beaches, dunes, art galleries, wineries, and Grand Rapids' urban amenities. That balance of value, accessibility, and variety of year-round activities makes the city a practical and attractive anchor for exploring the region.
