Edgartown is a small coastal town in Dukes County, Massachusetts, situated on the eastern end of Martha's Vineyard, the large island south of Cape Cod. With a year-round population of roughly 4,500 residents, the town swells considerably each summer as visitors arrive for the beaches, harbor, and classic New England charm. Edgartown is best known for its beautifully preserved collection of nineteenth-century whaling captains' homes—many painted white and trimmed in black, earning them the nickname "gingerbread houses"—and for serving as the main gateway to the up-island and down-island communities of Martha's Vineyard. The town sits approximately 70 miles south of Boston, with the journey typically involving a drive to Woods Hole followed by a ferry crossing of around 45 minutes to an hour.

A walk through the Edgartown Historic District along Main and North Water Streets reveals the town's whaling-era heritage in a particularly compact and photogenic setting. White-painted Greek Revival mansions line narrow streets shaded by old elm trees, and many of the homes are accompanied by small interpretive plaques. The district is essentially the downtown itself, so visitors can easily pair a self-guided walking tour with a meal at a harborfront restaurant or a stop in one of the local boutiques, all within a few blocks of the waterfront.

Standing at the entrance to Edgartown Harbor, the Edgartown Lighthouse is one of the most photographed landmarks on the island. The small white-and-brown wooden lighthouse dates to 1939, replacing an earlier 1828 tower, and is reached by a short, scenic walk along a stone-and-boardwalk path from the harbor. It is a favorite spot for sunrise and sunset viewing, and the surrounding area is popular for picnicking and beachcombing along the adjacent sandbar.

Just across the harbor lies Chappaquiddick, accessible by the small On-Time ferry, which runs every few minutes and takes only about five minutes. Once on the "other side," visitors find a quieter, more rural landscape of rolling meadows, kettle ponds, and dune-backed beaches. Highlights include the Trustees-managed Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge at the island's eastern tip and the Mytoi Japanese garden, both of which offer a peaceful contrast to the bustle of downtown Edgartown during peak season.

A short drive south of the village center brings visitors to South Beach, the island's most famous stretch of oceanfront, prized for its surf, white sand, and broad views toward the Atlantic. With its combination of historic streetscapes, harbor setting, and access to the broader island's beaches, lighthouses, and nature preserves, Edgartown offers short-term-rental owners a steady seasonal draw and a setting that feels distinctly tied to place.
