About Ashland

Ashland is a small rural city and the county seat of Clark County, in the southwestern corner of Kansas, with a population of roughly 800 residents. Set amid the rolling shortgrass prairie of the High Plains, the community has the quiet, wide-open character typical of agricultural and ranching towns in this part of the state, and it has long served as a waypoint along the historic Santa Fe Trail corridor. The nearest major city is Wichita, which lies about 150 miles to the northeast, while Dodge City, a popular tourist stop in its own right, is roughly 65 miles to the north.

Just outside Ashland, Big Basin Prairie Preserve is one of the more distinctive natural attractions in western Kansas. Managed by the state, the preserve centers on a large circular sinkhole and surrounding mixed-grass prairie, with trails, wildlife viewing, and stark scenery that draws birders, hikers, and geology enthusiasts. It sits only a short drive west of town, generally under 30 minutes, making it easy to reach for a half-day outing from a rental property in Ashland.

About 15 minutes north of the city, Clark County State Lake offers a small but pleasant escape in an otherwise dry landscape. The reservoir supports fishing, non-powered boating, camping, and picnicking, and the surrounding woodlands attract migrating birds in spring and fall, giving the area an appeal well beyond its modest size.

A bit farther afield, the Cimarron National Grassland in neighboring Morton County is roughly an hour and a half to the west, near the town of Elkhart. As the only national grassland in Kansas, it preserves a striking stretch of the High Plains crossed by the Santa Fe Trail, with options for hiking, wildlife watching, and exploring the Point of Rocks and Middle Spring historic sites along the Cimarron River.

Ashland's appeal as a short-term rental base comes from the combination of small-town quiet, dark prairie skies, and access to a handful of genuinely off-the-beaten-path attractions. Guests looking to slow down, experience the High Plains, or trace the Santa Fe Trail find a comfortable staging point here, with both the well-known stops of Dodge City and the wider landscapes of southwestern Kansas within easy reach.
