Kellogg, ID

Kellogg is a small city in Shoshone County in the Idaho panhandle, with a population of roughly 2,400. It sits in the narrow Silver Valley along the Coeur d'Alene River and Interstate 90, hemmed in by the forested slopes of the Coeur d'Alene National Forest and the Bitterroot Range. The town carries a deep mining heritage — silver, lead, and zinc fueled prosperity in the early twentieth century, and the legacy of the Sunshine Mine still shapes local memory — but today it functions primarily as a year-round outdoor recreation hub and a gateway to the surrounding mountains. Spokane, Washington lies about sixty miles to the west, roughly an hour's drive, and is the nearest major city, while Coeur d'Alene is closer at around thirty-five miles west along I-90.

Silver Mountain Resort sits essentially within Kellogg, with its base area just minutes from downtown. The resort offers skiing and snowboarding in the winter and an extensive network of summer mountain biking and hiking trails, and it is also home to Silver Rapids, an indoor waterpark that draws families in the off-season. Its signature Kellogg Peak Gondola is one of the longest single-stage gondola rides in North America, ferrying visitors from the valley up to the mountain village for sweeping views of the Silver Valley and into Montana.

The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes is a roughly seventy-three-mile paved rail-trail that runs directly through Kellogg, connecting the town westward toward the Coeur d'Alene basin and east toward the Montana border. Cyclists, walkers, and cross-country skiers use the gently graded path as a scenic way to experience the region's lakes, river corridors, and forested ridgelines without contending with highway traffic.

A short drive east on I-90 brings visitors to Lookout Pass, a smaller, family-friendly ski and recreation area straddling the Idaho-Montana border that is well known for deep snowfall and short lift lines. Nearby, the town of Wallace sits about twelve miles east along the interstate, its turn-of-the-century main street listed in its entirety on the National Register of Historic Places and serving as a working example of a preserved silver-mining town.

Kellogg's combination of easy interstate access, four-season recreation, and an unfussy small-town character makes it a natural base for short-term rental investment. Visitors come for skiing, mountain biking, the trail system, and the surrounding national forest, and they find a compact downtown with restaurants, brewpubs, and historic storefronts that lend the place an authentic, working-class mountain feel rather than a polished resort veneer.
