Grimes Regulations

STRs are explicitly permitted citywide under Grimes’ rental program with no zoning caps, simple registration, and moderate $70 fees every two years plus self‑inspection and audit every ~4 years; compliance is straightforward, with light, complaint‑driven enforcement and a supportive city tone, making the rules friendly but not as streamlined as a city with truly minimal permitting.

About Grimes

Grimes is a growing suburban city situated primarily in Polk County, with a small portion extending into Dallas County, in central Iowa. With a population of approximately 15,000 residents, the community has evolved from a small farming settlement into one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the Des Moines metropolitan area. Grimes retains a family-friendly, community-oriented feel while offering convenient access to the amenities of the state capital. It serves as a comfortable home base for visitors exploring the greater Des Moines region, and lies roughly fifteen miles northwest of downtown Des Moines.

Saylorville Lake is one of the most popular outdoor recreation destinations in central Iowa, and the lake's western reaches sit just a short drive from Grimes. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the reservoir offers boating, fishing, swimming beaches, and miles of multi-use trails winding through wooded shoreline. The Saylorville Marina and adjacent recreation areas draw both boaters and casual visitors throughout the warmer months. From Grimes, the main lake areas are roughly twenty to twenty-five minutes northeast by car.

The Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines host the Iowa State Fair each August, one of the largest and best-attended state fairs in the country. Beyond the eleven-day fair, the grounds host livestock shows, concerts, and events year-round, and the fair's renowned food offerings, livestock exhibitions, and midway are a draw for visitors from across the region. The fairgrounds are approximately twenty-five minutes southeast of Grimes.

Adventureland Resort in nearby Altoona combines a classic amusement park, a separate water park, and a campground just east of Des Moines. It is one of the longest-operating amusement parks in the Midwest and remains a popular family destination during the summer months. The resort is roughly thirty minutes east of Grimes.

Downtown Des Moines offers additional cultural attractions within an easy drive, including the Pappajohn Sculpture Park, a four-acre open-air museum in the Western Gateway Park featuring more than two dozen works by acclaimed contemporary sculptors. The park is free to visit and sits within walking distance of other downtown destinations, including the Iowa State Capitol and the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden. From Grimes, the drive to the sculpture park is approximately twenty-five minutes.

Grimes presents a compelling case as a short-term rental market because of its balance of quiet suburban comfort and regional accessibility. Guests enjoy a residential setting with easy access to Des Moines's cultural attractions, major events like the Iowa State Fair, and outdoor recreation at Saylorville Lake. The combination of small-town character, proximity to a state capital, and reach into the central Iowa countryside makes Grimes a flexible and attractive base for a wide range of travelers.
